Membership

If you are landing on this webpage because you are registering for the joint HSS/ESHS meeting in Edinburgh, please note that the registration for the joint HSS/ESHS meeting includes membership to the ESHS from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2028. This applies to both new members and those who are renewing their membership. The benefits of ESHS membership are listed below.

By becoming a member of the European Society for the History of Science, you’ll be joining a thriving community of scholars with research interests in the history of science, technology and medicine; a community which is by no means limited to the European continent!

Established in 2003, the society has a relatively recent history, but it is now home to a vibrant international community, which has increasingly become more international as displayed in a recent mapping of its membership. Since 2022 Centaurus (now published by Brepols) has become the official ESHS history of science journal. It is published open access to implement the inclusivity policy and community-building policy that the society has committed to over the last years. You can read about this ambition in this editorial by its Editor-in-Chief.

We meet regularly every two years in our Biennial Conferences (happening in even years), and we organise ‘in-between’ meetings (in odd years). We have a thriving community of early-career scholars who contribute to both conferences and meetings. Memberships are offered at promotional rates to those who attend our conferences and are renewed as part of the conference registration for the following two years. Explore our website if you’d like to know more about the society!

What does become an ESHS member entail?

  • You’ll have right to vote at our General Assemblies which take place during the Biannual Conferences and elect the members of the ESHS Scientific Board, select the venue of the next conference and discuss issues of general interest to our community.
  • You’ll have right to nominate (and self-nominate if you wish) for the Scientific Board positions (check here for an overview: https://eshs.org/scientific-board/)
  • You’ll be able to attend our in-between meetings
  • You’ll be receiving information about the ESHS through our mailing list, which regularly keeps its member posted on the society, its journal, conferences, meetings, early career activities and more.

  • You’ll be invited to nominate candidates for the prestigious Neuenschwander Prize which is awarded every two years to scholars in our field for outstanding life‐long achievements and major contributions to the discipline (https://eshs.org/gustav-neuenschwander-prize/).
  • You’ll be invited to nominate candidates for the Early Career Lectures that are part of our biennial conferences’ programmes and showcase original research by early-career scholars (up to eight years after the PhD), emphasizing novel approaches to the history of science (and technology and medicine) within current historiographical discussions. • You’ll be part of this thriving community of scholars which has been into existence since 2003!
